Photoshop is a huge application to master. The best ways to start learning is to see what tools you have at your fingertips. Here are a couple of good reference sites for photoshop tools and palettes. Although, the documentation is for version 7, the basics are the same for CS2.

Preferred Photo Sites

Stock.Xchng is another huge, extremely good royalty free photo archive.
They offer most of the images in very high resolution which is great. Always start with graphic material that is far larger than you actually need. That way you have flexibility. What if you want to turn your design into a print piece later? So pick the largest possible format and make sure to archive your raw materials so you can always go back to them later.

Meanwhile, be careful to read the "image license" information on any photo you might want to use. The rules regarding what you can and can't use the images for differ from picture to picture.

Also, if you take photos yourself, why don't you join the stockxchang and upload some of your own and share and share alike? You can set your own terms regarding ways in which you wouldn't want your image to be used, i.e. not for commerical purposes.

Morgue File - A place to keep post production materials for use of reference, an inactive job file. This morgue file contains free high resolution digital stock photography for either corporate or public use.

You can request a picture of anything you want, and volunteer photographers will go out and attempt to actually take the picture you want. • Wikimedia - The Wikimedia Commons is a project that provides a central repository for free photographs, diagrams, animations, music, spoken text, video clips, and media of all sorts, used in pages of any Wikimedia project. Currently it contains 300,000 files and 25,137 collections. Frankly, I don’t know how I missed this huge resource. Thanks ANDRE for posting it.



• Wallpaper Stock - You can find a nice selection of pictures in many categories. They are meant for desktop wallpapers, but they work as stock photos as well.
